Achieving Work-Life Balance Through a Flexible Workplace

Examples of a flexible workplaceFeeling burned out on the job? Overwhelmed by work-life conflict?

Work-related stress bogs down employee satisfaction and work effectiveness — and ultimately impacts companies’ bottom line.

Workplace flexibility gives employees more control over their schedules and work time, allowing realistic work and life patterns to fit within the needs of both employers and employees.

To honor the top flexible employers in the nation, the esteemed When Work Works Award is presented annually to organizations that prioritize a flexible and supportive workplace community.

Formerly known as the Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility, the awards distinguished a total of 284 organizations for 2014.

DesignHammer has won the When Work Works Award for three years in a row.

“Workplace flexibility and the culture we’ve created around it is core to our business,” said DesignHammer Managing Partner David Minton.

Eight winning employers, including DesignHammer, are in the North Carolina’s Triangle region (view the interactive map of When Work Works Award winners).

North Carolina tied for third as the most-winning state, with 15 employers as recipients.

Workplace flexibility has proven to increase employee engagement and performance, encourage employee health and well-being, as well as attract and retain talent.

“Our employees are our greatest resource, and workflex continues to demonstrate benefits for both staff and management,” Minton said.

Numerous organizations of various size and manpower have committed to rethinking and addressing workplace challenges, and serve as powerful examples for the rest of the business sphere.

The When Work Works Awards are unique for their rigorous, two step selection process: an evaluation of employers’ workflex initiatives and a confidential employee survey are measured against national norms from the National Study of Employers.

“The When Work Works Award recognizes organizations that foster a culture of workplace flexibility and effectiveness, which gives them a competitive advantage,” said Lisa Horn, director of the Society of Human Resource Management’s Workplace Flexibility Initiative.

The awards are based on six components: autonomy; work-life fit; supervisor support for work success; satisfaction with earnings, benefits and opportunities for advancement; opportunities for learning; and a culture of trust.

“DesignHammer understands that good workers work best when they have flexibility, whether that means leaving early to care for a family member, working from home, or even just deciding what tools to use,” said Jay Roberts, DesignHammer developer. “It comes from mutual respect and trust between DesignHammer and its employees.”

DesignHammer’s flexible workplace offerings include:

  • Flexible work hours and location, allowing employees to work from home and/or outside of traditional office hours
  • Compressed work weeks and short-notice flex time
  • Community of flexible and supportive colleagues
  • Paid holidays and time off, including volunteer time
