Durham Agencies Work Together for Charity

Durham, N.C. – This year, Durham's creative agencies worked together to create a unique fundraising event that would support the burgeoning arts community in the Bull City. Nine of the area's top agencies competed in a sponsored field games event called the Bull City Blowout to raise money for a local non-profit organization. For the inaugural event, SeeSaw Studio was selected for the fundraising efforts and received close to $4,000 for their after-school program that fosters design-focused arts education and entrepreneurial skills among the city's youth.

The inaugural event was a great success, attracting local celebrities from the minor league Durham Bulls baseball team as well as a DJ from local radio station 96rock. The games ranged from a tricycle relay race to a CEO air guitar contest. "The SeeSaw kids appreciate the effort from people who work in the industries they one day hope to work in," said Michelle Gonzales, SeeSaw's executive director who worked closely with the agencies to organize the event. "It was a great opportunity to have the kids and professionals interact in a fun setting."

Participating agencies for Bull City Blowout 2010 include DesignHammer, Duke Creative Services, Flywheel Design, Largemouth Communications, McKinney, Ogilvy & Mather, Rella:Cowan, The Republik, and Viget Labs. The agencies seek to make the Bull City Blowout a fixture event in the city, bringing creative professionals together and raising awareness for programs that enhance the arts community.

Durham, known for its historical tobacco industry and Duke University, is now also the hub of a robust creative community. Today the city is host to two large annual arts festivals, the Full Frame Documentary Festival and American Dance Festival, and currently possesses the largest theatre in the Carolinas, the new Durham Performing Arts Center.

The fast growing area is now ripe with opportunities for artists, filmmakers, writers, designers and musicians. Founder of Light Rain Media and recent transplant to the Bull City, Revere La Noue remarked, "Durham has so much creative talent lurking between the ears of its citizens. Bull City Blowout is such a great event because it brings that spirit out into daylight."

About The Bull City Blowout

The first Bull City Blowout, a public field day event, was held April 16, 2010. It was conceived as a way for Durham creative agencies to have fun, compete, and connect, while raising money and awareness for a worthy Durham nonprofit organization. The event seeks to raise the profile of Durham as an energetic, creative capital. The inaugural Bull City Blowout benefitted SeeSaw Studio, a free after-school program that teaches art, design and entrepreneurship to creative local teens.
