Beer tasters: Kosta, Jay, Paul, Frank, David, and Stephen Blue Point’s Toxic Sludge Black IPAEvery Friday at DesignHammer, we take time after a long day of designing cutting-edge websites to have a gourmet beer tasting. Today Paul chose Blue Point Brewing Company’s Toxic Sludge for us to sample. Toxic Sludge is a small batch Black IPA brewed to benefit birds hurt by oil spills.

“[A] dry-hopped Black IPA, it’s as smooth as water off a duck's back.”

Blue Point Brewing Company is Long Island’s only microbrewery, founded in 1998 by two long-time friends, Mark Burford and Pete Cotter. The brewery was inspired by their life-long dream and built from a rare assemblage of equipment collected from breweries around the country. While Paul opened the Toxic Sludge, David introduced the tasters to the concept of Endhiran, the most expensive Indian movie ever made. “Anticipation!” Jay exclaimed, setting the tone. After a sip, Paul remarked, “Mmmm.. IPA.” Savoring the beer for a moment, “A lot of these beers — maybe it's just me — are fruity.” Peering through the glass Frank declared, “It looks like a Coke.” “No light passes through it,” Paul noted after holding it up to the light. “It can completely block out the sun,” David agreed. While we were sipping, Kosta suggested we adjourn to the DesignHammer balcony to enjoy the beautiful North Carolina afternoon. As we enjoyed the warm weather Frank declared, “This is my kind of beer.” “I am very happy,” Jay agreed. DesignHammer frequents the Hope Valley Bottle Shop, a local specialty shop near DesignHammer’s world headquarters in southwest Durham. Check out their extensive selection of carefully chosen wine and beer. Tell them DesignHammer sent you.
